Room 8: Grid and Structure

01:01

Sober, objective, anonymous: the grid is a symbol of contemporary society, of mass production and mass consumption. We encounter it in minimalism just as much as in Pop Art. It is austere and beautiful, embodying both order and decoration, and creates an ornamental effect. Whilst serial repetition devalues the individual element on the one hand, on the other it sharpens our perception of the visual worlds of everyday life: commas, Wollsiegel logos, escalators, pop culture figures, flowers or simply stains become recognisable as symbols.
What appears innocent and decorative at first glance encourages us to look beneath the supposedly smooth surface. It draws our attention to society, its modes of production, its notions of individuality and the masses, and, not least, to the images in which an era reflects itself.
