This watercolour depicts the Ufa-Palast am Zoo (Ufa Palace by the Zoo), a cinema in Berlin-Charlottenburg that opened in 1919. Grossberg focuses on the front entrance, where a long queue of people has formed. The film being shown is Mensch ohne Namen (Man Without a Name), starring Werner Krauss in the lead role. The feature film by director Gustav Ucicky dates from 1932.
The Ufa-Palast am Zoo was the Ufa film studio's most important premiere cinema. It was completely destroyed in an air raid in 1943. In 1957, the Zoo Palast (Zoo Palace) was built on the same site.
