1894: Carl Grossberg (born Georg Carl Wilhelm Grandmontagne) is born on 6 September in (Wuppertal-) Elberfeld.
1913–14: Studying architecture at the Royal Technical College of Aachen and at the Grand-Ducal Hessian Polytechnic School in Darmstadt.
1914: During the First World War, Grossberg is deployed on the Western Front in France. He is buried in a trench and suffers physical and psychological trauma as a result.
1919: Grossberg begins studying painting in Weimar, initially at the Academy of Fine Arts, then at the State Bauhaus Weimar from March onwards.
1921: In March, Grossberg leaves the Bauhaus and eventually settles in Sommerhausen.
1923: On 18 July, he marries Mathilde (Tilde) Schwarz (1896–1990).
1924: On 2 October, their daughter Eva (1924–2014) is born.
1925: Grossberg goes on a trip to Amsterdam and Zandvoort.
1926: Grossberg signs a three-year contract with the Berlin gallerist Karl Nierendorf.
1927: On 4 December, his daughter Leonore (1927–2014) is born.
1929: He joins the ‘Verein Berliner Künstler’ (Berlin Artists’ Association).
Between 1929 and 1932, Grossberg takes on several commissions for apartment renovations and interior design projects.
1931: Grossberg develops the ‘Grossberg Single-Colour Wallpaper’ for the North German wallpaper factory Hölscher & Breimer (NORTA), which becomes a great success.
Between February and April, he stays at the Villa Massimo in Rome on a scholarship.
1933: On 30 January, Adolf Hitler is appointed Reich Chancellor.
Grossberg develops the idea of an ‘industrial plan’ that aims to provide an overview of German industry in pictures.
1934: For the Berlin exhibition Deutsches Volk – Deutsche Arbeit (German People – German Labour), Grossberg creates the mural Industrielandschaft (Industrial Landscape) on behalf of the Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda.
1939: At the end of August, Grossberg is called up for military service. After serving in Poland and the Netherlands, he is transferred to France.
1940: On 10 September, Grossberg is involved in a car accident on a country road near Laon, in which his passenger is killed. Grossberg is court-martialled for the accident.
On 19 October, Carl Grossberg takes his own life.
