Vlaminck’s painting River Landscape was confiscated from the Elberfeld Municipal Museum, today the Von der Heydt Museum. It had been donated to the collection in 1912. In 1939 it was auctioned in Lucerne. After many changes of ownership it now returns for the first time to Wuppertal for this exhibition, on loan from a private collection.
The whereabouts of another painting, which had belonged to the collection of the Barmer Kunstverein since 1913 and was also confiscated in 1937, remain unclear. Vlaminck’s Riverbank (1912) was either destroyed in 1943 or ceded to person or persons unknown.
