Die Boote

Vlaminck, Maurice de (1876-1958) | Künstler:in

01:08

Painted in 1905, this landscape of the Seine is fascinating for the subtle interplay of light reflections and brushstrokes that describe the vast expanse of water, but also extend into the sky. The painting is characterised by a sense of shimmering, comparable to the glistening surface of the water. From a slightly elevated position, we look out over the Seine, painted in Chatou near the bridge between the Île de Chatou and Rueil. The river is bordered at the top by a green strip of bank, with a row of houses and trees. Two small boats are sailing on the river, their white sails flapping in the wind, matching the red brushstrokes on the left of the picture. The boats are called 'monotypes de Chatou', small sailing boats with bamboo masts, designed in 1901 for the Chatou water sports club and very popular until around 1930. Vlaminck painted them again and again.

In addition to the various shades of blue, the artist used pink, which creates a special mood of light. He used the complementary colours red and green, as well as white dots and areas, to create colourful accents.
