Flusslandschaft

Vlaminck, Maurice de (1876-1958) | Künstler:in

It is a great pleasure for the Von der Heydt Museum to be able to present this painting in the exhibition. It is now privately owned, but was part of the museum's collection before the Second World War. It was donated by the Wuppertal magistrate von Hirsch in 1912 and added to the collection, which already included a still life by Vlaminck. In 1937 the work was confiscated by the Nazis as 'degenerate' and in 1939 it was auctioned by the Galerie Fischer in Lucerne. It thus passed into private hands. For the exhibition, it has been temporarily loaned back to Wuppertal.

Probably painted in 1910, this painting, like many of Vlaminck's landscapes, depicts the characteristic Chatou railway bridge as seen from the riverbank. A bare tree stump protrudes into the scene on the right, creating a sad picture. The picture is thus clearly limited to the right, while it can be imaginatively extended to the left. A figure sits in a small boat on the shore in front. The sky is dark and matches the surface of the water in colour and design. The cubic shape of the houses is striking and reminiscent of Cézanne's landscapes.
