Blaue Vase mit Blumen

Vlaminck, Maurice de (1876-1958) | Künstler:in

01:09

Most of Vlaminck's still lifes focus on everyday, domestic objects, mainly crockery and pottery such as fruit bowls or jugs. Pieces of fruit and books are often added. In this painting, a colourful bouquet of flowers attracts all the attention. It is in a dark blue vase with a handle. The format is also striking: while the painter often painted medium-sized horizontal formats, he chose a narrow vertical format for this still life. The format is ideally suited to the dimensions of the subject.

The bouquet is placed on a blue surface, probably a table with a cover, the edge of which runs diagonally through the picture. A white cone of light surrounds the vase, creating an accent around it. A blossom of red and green dots has fallen from the bouquet and lies in the centre in front of the vase, which in turn stands exactly in the centre of the picture. The background is a warm yellow and orange. The complementary colours red and green are juxtaposed in the bouquet. Black outlines can be seen in places. Although only one object is shown vertically, the whole scene is animated and dynamic - an effect achieved by the colour composition and the application of paint.
