Stillleben

Vlaminck, Maurice de (1876-1958) | Künstler:in

01:21

This painting, done in 1907, is very different from Vlaminck's other still lifes. It is less close-up and does not have a diffuse background, but shows an almost three-dimensional scene. It is an interior with a simple wooden table. It is placed in central perspective, giving the impression that we are looking at a room, albeit a narrow one. The table is parallel to the bottom edge of the picture, with a bowl of fruit and a blue vase on it. A white tablecloth can be seen under the bowl of fruit, but only part of it is on the table. Behind this, a framed picture hangs crookedly on a blue wall, its subject unrecognisable.

The painting is strongly reminiscent of Cézanne's still lifes, with which Vlaminck was very familiar. In 1907, when the work was painted, Cézanne's art was omnipresent in Paris. Following his death the previous year, numerous exhibitions were organised in his honour. The white tablecloth in particular, which does not seem to be woven into the fabric but appears flat and solid, seems to be a reference to Cézanne. The slightly distorted perspective, particularly in the fruit bowl in Vlaminck's painting, is also reminiscent of Cézanne. The colours in the painting are muted. Applied in a naturalistic manner, the focus is no longer on the colours and their luminosity as such, but on the description of the chosen objects.
