Seineufer bei Bougival

Vlaminck, Maurice de (1876-1958) | Künstler:in

01:01

In Bougival, a small French community about 15 kilometres from Paris, Claude Monet, Berthe Morisot and Alfred Sisley, among others, painted in the 19th century. Vlaminck, who lived in nearby Chatou, travelled through the villages and landscapes along the Seine in search of suitable subjects. His route took him to Bougival, where this painting was made.

On the right, the banks of the Seine curve towards the horizon. There are a few small houses and three small boats in a row on the left. The wide surface of the Seine is composed of many short horizontal brushstrokes in various shades of blue, green and pink. The strokes on the bank are longer and vertical. Red, yellow and ochre mark this area and form a strong contrast with the water and sky. The movement of the brushstrokes not only gives rhythm to the whole picture, but also sets the eye in motion, encouraging it to explore the whole picture plane with a variety of colour stimuli. This is perhaps Vlaminck's most explicit use of Impressionist painting.
