Two bright orange-red trees appear on the right of the picture, corresponding to the rowing boat painted in the same colour as the title. Both elements are delicately framed by a black outline. An area at the lower edge of the picture, also in orange and set off by the complementary contrasting green next to it, links up with the hinted orange hilly landscape above the surface of the water. The rowing boat glides gently across the water, parallel to the shore and the larger boat behind it on the left. The funnel on the boat echoes the shape of the tree trunks on the right. In this way, Vlaminck finds a suitable echo for every motif and every form.
Although the oarsman has been captured in motion, he conveys a very calm, static impression. The sense of movement that nevertheless characterises the scene is created not by the motifs but by the colours and the application of paint. Sometimes Vlaminck applies the brush in small dabs, sometimes in longer strokes, sometimes he fills the form completely with paint. In this way, he chooses an individual application for each pictorial element and yet creates an overall composition that is harmonious in its dynamics.
