Park in Carrières-Saint-Denis

Vlaminck, Maurice de (1876-1958) | Künstler:in

01:25

Vlaminck exhibited a total of five paintings at the Salon d'Automne in 1905, the legendary exhibition where the group around Matisse was pejoratively dubbed the 'Fauves' ('savages'). They were all presented in the same room. One of the five works was 'Park in Carrières-Saint-Denis', painted in 1904 and exhibited at the Salon d'Automne under the title 'Le jardin'.

The scene is dominated by a few dark tree trunks in the foreground, which form a grid in front of the subject behind them. The foliage, mostly mottled orange, lines the detail and appears almost ornamental. This accentuates the surface of the picture, while greatly reducing the painterly illusion of depth. This is one of many artistic choices that emphasise Vlaminck's unconventional and avant-garde painting style, linking him, for example, to the painters of the 'Nabis' group. Through the trees we can see a large estate, a former castle, with an English-style garden. A highly stylised figure in black is leaning against the trunk of a tree on the right, apparently contemplating the estate. Vlaminck has applied the paint in many short brushstrokes, using strong tones and a lot of black. The reference to van Gogh, Vlaminck's great model, is also clear in this painting. Derain also painted this castle together with Vlaminck, working from easel to easel. They shared a studio in Chatou.
