#228 - Glossary: CUBISMS

00:57

Cubism is a style of art that originated in France around 1908. The term Cubism is derived from the French word 'cube' or the Latin word 'cubus', which means 'cube'. The artists Pablo Picasso (1881-1976) and Georges Braque (1882-1963) were important founders of this art movement. Cubism came after Fauvism.  Picasso and Braque no longer painted according to the old rules. They dropped the distinction between foreground, background and centre. Cubism also no longer depicted light in the same way as before. Cubist paintings were often painted with few and rather pale colours. The artists did not paint things as they really looked, but divided them into simple shapes such as cubes, cones and cylinders. They tried to show these objects from different angles at the same time. Cubism lasted until the 1920s.
