The term 'avant-garde' comes from the French and means 'vanguard'. In art, it refers to artists or groups who are ahead of their time. They consciously break with tradition and create new, unusual ideas, styles or techniques. Avant-garde artists often aim to change art and society. Examples include movements such as Surrealism, Dadaism and Futurism.
