In art, 'modernism' refers to an era that began towards the end of the 19th century and lasted until the middle of the 20th century. Modernist artists wanted to break with old traditions and create something new. They experimented with new techniques, themes and styles to express their own view of the world. Well-known modernist movements include Fauvism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Surrealism and Cubism.
