#218 - Glossary: SALON

00:35

In art history, the term 'salon' refers to a regular exhibition of works of art, often organised by an official institution. The most famous of these was the Paris Salon, organised by the French Academy of Fine Arts from the 17th century. It displayed works by artists selected by a jury. These salons were important for introducing new art to the public and for promoting the reputation of artists.

The Salon d'Automne, the Autumn Salon, was created in 1903 as a counter-movement to the classical Salon.
