#210 - Glossary: FAUVISMS

00:50

The Fauve period began in 1905 with a joint exhibition by Maurice de Vlaminck and other painters in Paris. The term 'Fauvism' is derived from the French word 'fauves', which means 'wild beasts'. The term was not chosen by the artists themselves, but came from outside in response to a shocked public. In Fauvism, painters used strong, bright colours to express their feelings and did not paint things as they really were. They paid less attention to detail and simplified forms. Their aim was to enhance their expression and express their feelings. Fauve artists did not try out colours in advance, but decided which colours to use as they worked. Fauvism lasted only a few years.
