Paquet-Steinhausen, Marie (1881-1958) | Maler:in

Marie Paquet-Steinhausen was a German painter, graphic artist and porcelain painter. Born in Frankfurt am Main in 1881, the eldest daughter of the painter Wilhelm Steinhausen, she received an autodidactic education under the guidance of her father and her godfather Hans Thoma, two influential artists of the time. Travels to Vienna, Paris and London broadened her artistic horizons. Shortly after the turn of the century, Paquet-Steinhausen exhibited in Berlin and Frankfurt. Her early works were, as was usual for women painters of the time, floral still lifes and landscapes with Impressionist traits. The Wuppertal still life 'Crystals and Shells' was painted before 1909 and entered the collection in 1919. It depicts rock crystals, various gemstones and pebbles, shells with pearls and a snail shell. The detailed rendering focuses on the surface effect of the individual objects, making the small-format still life radiant and luminous despite the reduced colour palette.

Paquet-Steinhausen's paintings were recognised at exhibitions in Frankfurt, Berlin and Cologne, although art critics of the time often reduced her work to 'feminine sensibility'. After her father's death in 1924, Paquet-Steinhausen took over his studio. In 1932 she went to Paris to study portrait painting. The artist lived for a time with her husband, the poet Alfons Paquet, in Dresden-Hellerau, later moving to the Rhine-Main area and then back to Frankfurt in 1950, where she continued to develop her painting. Despite family commitments - she had four children - she always had a studio. A major exhibition in Frankfurt on her 70th birthday celebrated her creative power and importance. Paquet-Steinhausen was present in the art world for a long time and left works in several museums. Despite this, she is relatively unknown today. The Wuppertal Still Life has also not been exhibited for a long time and is therefore one of the hidden treasures of the Depot.
