Selbstbildnis

Hoette-Borberg, Johanna (1869-1959) | Maler:in

01:25

This self-portrait by the Elberfeld artist Johanna Hoette-Borberg is one of the unknown paintings in the collection. Born in 1869, she lived in Elberfeld and worked as a portrait painter. After 1907 she married into the Hoette family. She died in 1962 in Wuppertal-Elberfeld.
Painted between 1895 and 1898, this self-portrait shows the artist sitting in a three-quarters length pose, wearing a beige-green lace dress. The varnish, the transparent protective layer over the actual painting, has darkened considerably. A table with books in the background is visible, as is a heavy, dark red curtain. The sitter is leafing through a small book with two illustrations, perhaps an art history textbook, in which she is looking for inspiration and models. Her gaze, however, is not fixed on the book, but wanders, lost in thought or melancholy, in an indeterminate direction - or is she looking at us?

So far, little information has been found about the artist's career and professional situation. In addition to this self-portrait, the collection contains other paintings by the artist: portraits of her family, father, mother and sister, as well as two landscapes, all donated or bequeathed by the artist herself.
