Room 1

01:23

The exhibition extends over 10 rooms and is organised chronologically. This first exhibition room, however, is dedicated to Fontana's late work and his famous series of works from the late 1950s and 1960s. In these works, he continued to explore his formal possibilities in spatial art.

"Man’s true conquest of space is his detachment from the earth, from the horizon line... A new aesthetic emerges, luminous forms that move through space. Movement, colour, time and space are the basic concepts of the new art", Fontana wrote in 1951 in the "Technical Manifesto of Spazialismo". This reveals his affinity with astronomy and space travel, which was of great importance to his art. Undoubtedly a milestone for him was the first photograph of the earth from space, which was taken on 24 October 1946 and can be seen below. Inspired by the discovery of previously unknown cosmic spaces, Fontana also wanted to open up new spaces with the means of art.

We are showing these new artistic spaces with around 100 works by Lucio Fontana from our own collection and from national and international lenders. The main lender and co-operation partner is the Fondazione Lucio Fontana in Milan.
