The strong blue monochrome canvas is criss-crossed by four vertical cuts. These 'tagli' (cuts) vary in length. It is as if Lucio Fontana started with the left cut and then moved to the right in a precise movement. The cuts open up the surface and create a real space. At the same time, they hint at an imaginary space behind, which remains dark and indefinable.
At first glance, Fontana's 'cut-out pictures' are not very different from one another: they have different colours and sometimes more or less long and short cuts. However, the backs of the works give them an individual touch, as Fontana left notes there. For example, on the blue work from the Kunstpalast Düsseldorf in front of you, it reads:
- 'Questa mattina avevo pensato di non fare niente' (This morning I thought of doing nothing) - Kunstpalast Düsseldorf (68 T 31).
And behind the grey picture on the right:
- 'Oggi è primavera sono felice' (Today it's spring, I'm happy) - Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern (66 T 9).
