Nacht

König, Erinna (1947-2021) | Künstler:in

The works of Düsseldorf artist Erinna König (1947-2021), like those of Fontana, open up new perspectives on space, material and surface. The work 'Night' clearly shows how Erinna König has explored the art and theories of Lucio Fontana in her work. Erinna König has developed Fontana's gesture of piercing in her own way. The work consists of a dark stainless steel plate perforated with a pointed object. The work is framed by a semi-transparent white curtain, draped asymmetrically and reaching down to the floor on the right.

This design connects the artwork to the surrounding exhibition space. The star-shaped holes on the metallic background, combined with the title 'Night', evoke a nocturnal view of the starry sky. This open structure invites us to discover the space beyond the surface, a central idea in Fontana's work. The fact that the neon yellow colour is visible in Erinna König's perforated holes reinforces the association with the night sky and at the same time reveals a difference to Fontana's 'buchi' and 'tagli': Fontana often covered his perforations with black gauze, symbolising infinity. In Erinna König's work, infinity becomes concrete in the idea of the universe.
