Lucio Fontana's spatial sculpture Scultura spaziale (1957) rises from a broad, flat position on the floor like a stem growing from a root. At eye level, the bronze stele, which appears to have grown, bears a flat, organic-looking sail-like form interspersed with "buchi". The entire spatial sculpture has a floral effect. The bronze surface extends into the space like the tips of plant leaves, interacting with the surrounding exhibition space. The second, taller, iron sculpture is also reminiscent of living things. Growing organically from the floor, it ends in a form perforated with "buchi", reminiscent of shark eggs.
Fontana placed the sculptures as a group in his garden. In this way, the abstract plant sculptures seemed to connect across spatial distance, filling an invisible, only imaginable communication space. The creation of extraordinary spatial situations and environments that involve the viewer is a core element of Fontana's art.
