In 1966/67, Lucio Fontana, together with the Düsseldorf photographer Lothar Wolleh, designed a multiple that was published in an edition of 15. It consists of a black lacquered box closed with a Plexiglas panel. Fontana has scratched his signature into the plexiglass. Inside the box are: three wooden Teatrino elements (lacquered in black, orange and magenta) designed by Fontana, four silver gelatine prints of photographs taken by Wolleh in Fontana's Milan studio and a scored and perforated aluminium 'Metallo' by Fontana. The copy shown here is numbered 13/15 and belongs to the estate of Lothar Wolleh. This collaboration became the model for the editions and artists' books of the following years, which Wolleh produced in collaboration with Joseph Beuys, Gotthard Graubner, Adolf Luther, Heinz Mack, Blinky Palermo and Günther Uecker, among others.
The edition was often dismantled, and individual pieces ended up in various collections. A complete copy can still be found in the estate of Otto Piene, for example.
