Concetto spaziale, I Quanta / Raumkonzept, Quanten

Fontana, Lucio (1899-1968) | Künstler:in

01:41

Lucio Fontana's 'Quanta' (Quantum) series belongs to the larger family of 'Tagli', the artist's famous cut-out paintings. From the late 1940s, Fontana used various materials to break up the closed surface of the canvas, allowing it to grow into the space. The first 'tagli', in which Fontana cut into the canvas with a knife to make the space in front of or behind the canvas visible and tangible, were created in 1958.

"Concetto spaziale, I Quanta (1960) consists of nine elements that can be arranged in any way. The different shapes of the red canvases, each traversed by one or two characteristic cuts, seem to dance across the wall. The title of the series, Quanta, comes from physics: "quant" refers to the smallest indivisible unit of a physical quantity. It forms the basis of many modern technologies, from atomic physics to quantum computers.

In his wall installation, Lucio Fontana refers primarily to the idea of a quantum, which moves freely in space as part of a larger whole, defying the known laws of physics and possessing hitherto unknown properties. In the first half of the 20th century, quantum mechanics was the subject of intense scientific research, which also led to philosophical discussions in the 1950s.

This series of works combines Fontana's visionary artistic thinking with his scientific interests. He approaches the complexity of scientific theories and challenges intuitively, without attempting to solve the physical riddle of space and time.
