Blick auf das Meer

Monet, Claude (1840-1926) | Maler:in

00:59

Claude Monet (1840–1926) transformed the coastline, waves breaking with white whitecaps and the open sea with pink horizons, into an event of colour and light. Monet's artistic concern was always to capture the weather, atmosphere and ambience, as well as the 'moment' and the light everywhere. This was Monet's aim here in the Mediterranean, a place which was a constant source of inspiration for him throughout the 1880s. In the details, he was a master of the suggestive characterisation.

Monet's work is synonymous with Impressionism, which takes its name from Impression, Soleil Levant, painted in 1872. Initially derided by critics, Impressionist artists were a revolution in visual perception. Freed from the need for an exact reproduction of the appearance of the world in all its detail, they increasingly relied on the artistic means of colour, movement, composition in the open air and in front of an object, the fleetingness of a momentary impression and the individual signature.
