In 1823, the German artist Ludwig Richter (1803–1884) travelled to Rome on a scholarship. It was there that the Austrian-born Joseph Anton Koch (1768–1839) played an important role in Richter's development as a landscape painter.
It was in Rome that he painted this work, which he recorded in his catalogue raisonné in 1830, in memory of an impression he had made on the trip: "Girl in the meadow. Tyrolean picture. Calm, brilliant morning reflected in the lake. Flowery meadows. Figure and landscape form a chord".
The painting can be classified as Late Romantic. It depicts the idyllic togetherness of a mother and child in front of a tranquil lake. The child holds a garland of flowers in her hands. On the shore is a small group of animals and shepherds. In the background are the mountains of the Tyrolean Alps. The colour blue dominates the painting and conveys a sense of calm and harmony, as does the peaceful mother and child scene. The composition is well chosen: The lines all point towards the centre, creating an almost staged setting for the couple.
