Haraguchi, Noriyuki (1946-2020) | Bildhauer:in

A dark green plastic mass has been poured over an aluminium structure, the flow marks of which are visible at the edges. The surface is almost completely smooth, creating a shiny, almost reflective effect. Created by the Japanese artist Noriyuki Haraguchi, the wall object is part of a series of Impressionist works. Created around a hundred years later, it is nevertheless possible to find moments of connection between the works: They share a fascination with the appearance of surfaces, which the Impressionists saw particularly in the surface of water, and the way in which surfaces change with the incidence of light.
Haraguchi became known in Germany through his participation in documenta VI in 1977. There he presented a space installation that included a black reflective surface on the floor. Such reflective surfaces and glossy lacquer works have a special significance in Japanese art, which the artist draws on and reinterprets with modern means.
